For our third example, we assume that the retailer has a vendor with whom they are interested in sharing information. In particular, they wish to provide the vendor with store-by-store sales data, for those products that they purchase from the vendor. Using our standard components, they can make this information available to the vendor in real time, servicing the queries from the vendor either from their store systems or from a centralized sales analysis system using audited data. The following diagram depicts this configuration.
In this case the vendor system(s) becomes a part of the retailer’s “extranet”. Each vendor system involved would require the installation of a standard or custom component to enable this communication. Note that this configuration gives the vendor direct access to the retailer’s store systems. If the retailer only wanted to provide summarized or audited sales data, the store systems would not be involved in the deployment.
